In this workshop we will explore abstract mark making through play, curiosity, and child-like wonder.

Before we learned to write words, we communicated through marks. As children, we drew with curiosity, freedom, and a sense of play - without worrying about getting it "right” and without fear of getting our hands dirty. We played in the dirt and we made things. This workshop invites you to reconnect with that creative spirit through abstract mark making and intuitive drawing.

Using a variety of drawing tools and materials, we'll explore line, texture, rhythm, and gesture as a personal visual language. Through guided exercises and playful experimentation, you'll discover how letting go of expectations can open the door to greater creativity and self-expression.

Whether you're an experienced artist or simply curious about abstract drawing, you'll leave with new techniques, greater confidence, and a renewed sense of creative freedom. No drawing experience is necessary - just a willingness to explore.

Returning to the first mark means:

→ reconnecting with curiosity

→ slowing down and truly seeing

→ discovering the language within ordinary things

→ responding intuitively

→ building something personal through lines and marks

Participant must bring the following:

Note: There is no need to buy expensive materials, please consider what you already have. If you’re missing something, let the instructor know.

• Apron or clothing you don't mind getting paint on

• Black gesso or black acrylic paint

• Spray bottle with water

• Acrylic paint: two or three earthy colors such as burnt umber, raw sienna, or yellow ochre. If you don’t have these specific colors, no need to purchase them, just bring whatever you have

• A small container, like a glass jar, to pour the gesso in

• A variety of paint brushes (3 to 5) from very thin to thick

• A container for water

• Different types of paper to draw on, from small to large sheets. Examples: recycled book pages, copy paper, drawing pad, newsprint, brown paper bags, vintage papers with or without illustrations but nothing too dark or too busy.

• Two black pens or markers with different tips

• A graphite pencil

• Glue stick

• Scissors

• Paper towels

The class will begin with a talk and a demonstration, so please plan to arrive early to allow time to settle in.

A short lunch break will be held from 12:30 to 1:00 PM. Kindly bring your own lunch and beverage.
