Create beautiful, one-of-a-kind designs on paper using a gel plate and acrylic paint. Mixed media artist Catherine Cruz will guide you through the basics of this playful printing process, sharing her techniques for building texture, layering colors, and creating unique designs. You will produce a collection of unique prints—perfect for use in collage, mixed media artwork, or handmade cards. This workshop is ideal for anyone curious about this exciting monoprinting method and is perfectly suited for beginners.
What you’ll get from this workshop:
· Methods for applying paint and pulling successful prints
· Techniques for creating unique and intricate layered designs
· Creative use of mark-making tools and masks
· Strategies for combining techniques
All materials are provided: Gel plate, brayer roller, acrylic paint, stencils, mark-making tools, paper.
A variety of papers will be provided but you are highly encouraged to bring your own papers to experiment on. Examples of suitable papers include tissue paper, Japanese rice papers, calligraphy paper, recycled book pages, and basically any paper that is porous and absorbent.
Class will start with a demonstration so please arrive a few minutes early to get set up so we can start on time. We will take a short lunch break between 12:30 and 1:00 pm so kindly bring your lunch and a beverage.
Note: Magazine image transfer is not included in this class.
About the instructor: Catherine Cruz is a French-American artist whose work is informed by textures and patterns created by the passing of time and the effects of the natural elements on the built environment. She holds a Bachelor of Science in interior design and she has worked in the field of architectural design and green building certification for over 25 years. Since 2019, Catherine has taught collage and mixed media workshops in the Bay Area and in France and this is her fifth year in Sonoma County.
